8 Days Motorbike Tour From Pakse To Luang Prabang

Riding a motorcycle from Pakse in Southern Laos to Luang Prabang in the North covers roughly 1,000 kilometers along Route 13. Covering this vast distance in 8 days means long, demanding saddle days combined with iconic Laos highlights. You will leave the lowlands and transition into the mountainous central regions.A relatively short, scenic ride via Route 13 or the newer expressway. The road turns wonderfully twisty as you approach the limestone karsts. you will be climbing steep, winding mountain roads with spectacular, sweeping highland views.connecting into the former royal capital.

Day 1: Pakse to Tad Lo (The Bolaven Plateau) ( L, D )
  • Distance: ~120 km ( 8:00 AM pick up from your hotel in Pakse )
  • Terrain: Sweeping, well-paved uphill climbs into cooler highlands.
  • Highlights: Ride east from Pakse into the Bolaven Plateau. Stop at Tad Fane, a massive twin-stream waterfall plunging 120 meters into a gorge. Grab lunch at a local coffee plantation in Paksong. Ride north toward Tad Lo, where you can park right by the river.
  • Overnight: Tad Lo eco-guesthouse.
Day 2: Tad Lo to Savannakhet ( B, L, D)
  • Distance: ~260 km
  • Terrain: Long, mostly flat tarmac routes passing through rural farming hubs.
  • Highlights: Head down from the plateau. Join Route 13 heading north. This is a pure transit day designed to knock out distance. Take breaks at small roadside stalls for Lao noodle soup (Khao Piak Sen). Arrive in Savannakhet by late afternoon to watch the sunset over the Mekong River bordering Thailand.
  • Overnight: Savannakhet guesthouse 
Day 3: Savannakhet to Thakhek ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~135 km
  • Terrain: Flat, straightforward tarmac with increasing views of distant limestone monoliths.
  • Highlights: A shorter ride allows you to save stamina for the mountain loops ahead. Cruise past local villages and arrive early in Thakhek, the ultimate staging ground for motorcycle enthusiasts in Central Laos. Spend the afternoon exploring Tham Pha Pha (Buddha Cave) right outside the town.
  • Overnight: Thakhek. 
Day 4: Thakhek to Thalang (The Thakhek Loop) ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~100 km
  • Terrain: Perfectly paved twisties, canyon gaps, and dramatic karst mountain curves.
  • Highlights: Ride onto Route 12 to start the world-famous Thakhek Loop. The road snakes through immense limestone walls. Stop at Tham Nang Aen cave. Push past the steep climbs to the top of the plateau to view the flooded forest ecosystem of the Nam Dun Reservoir.
  • Overnight: Thalang (a popular lakeside village geared toward adventure riders).
Day 5: Thalang to Vientiane ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~320 km
  • Terrain: Mountain curves shifting into heavily trafficked flat highways approaching the capital.
  • Highlights: This is your longest and most grueling ride. Wake up early to navigate the dirt tracks and paved segments via Lak Sao, looping back down to Route 13 North. Watch out for large trucks as you close in on Vientiane. Reward yourself with a cold Beerlao by the Mekong night market.
  • Overnight: Vientiane.
Day 6: Vientiane to Vang Vieng ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~140 km
  • Terrain: A mix of fast-moving plains moving into sharp, jagged mountain entryways.
  • Highlights: Avoid the express tollway (motorcycles are generally banned) and take the scenic old Route 13 North. As you approach Vang Vieng, massive jagged limestone peaks will burst out of the flat rice fields. Spend the afternoon taking your bike down dirt trails to Blue Lagoon 3 or hiking up to Nam Xay Viewpoint.
  • Overnight: Vang Vieng. 
Day 7: Vang Vieng to Phou Khoun ( B, L, D )
  • Distance: ~100 km
  • Terrain: Extreme high-altitude mountain passes, sharp switchbacks, and potential potholes.
  • Highlights: This is the pinnacle of Lao mountain riding. The road climbs steeply into the clouds. Stop at the Phou Khoun Crossroads (the intersection connecting northern provinces). The air is crisp here, offering 360-degree panoramic mountain views that are unbeatable for photography.
  • Overnight: Phou Khoun (local hill-tribe guesthouse or mountaintop glamping). 
Day 8: Phou Khoun to Luang Prabang ( B, L )
  • Distance: ~130 km
  • Terrain: Winding downhills, sweeping valleys, and standard urban asphalt.
  • Highlights: Enjoy the sweeping descent towards the ancient royal capital. Before entering the city center, veer off to visit the multi-tiered turquoise waters of Kuang Si Falls for a refreshing celebratory swim. Ride into UNESCO-protected Luang Prabang by late afternoon. End The Tour .
