Day 2 : Vientiane City Tour - Buddha Park by motorbike
Today you will discover the essential landmarks and iconic sights that the small and charismatic city of Vientiane has to offer. Vientiane remains a tranquil laid-back character, a world away from the frantic capitals in Asia, and most attractions can be reached on foot. Start at Wat Sisaket, believed to be Vientiane's oldest surviving temple, left intact after the Siamese invasion of 1828. The interior walls of the cloister are covered in niches containing over 2,000 silver and ceramic Buddha images. Next is a visit to Wat Phra Keo, built originally to house the famed Emerald Buddha and now a religious museum that displays a collection of art representing Lao and Khmer artefacts. Continue to Wat Si Muang - the most popular onet in town, before visiting Patuxai Monument, Laos' version of the Arc de Triomphe and its most prominent monument.
The city tour also takes you to the golden spired Pha That Luang, constructed in the 16th century and regarded as the holiest site in Laos, and the Buddha Park, built in 1958 by Luang Pu, a yogi-priest shaman. Then spend 45-minute drive out to Buddha Park. En route, stop and take photos of the Friendship Bridge which was built by the Australian government in 1994 and links Laos and Thailand. Enjoy a stroll around Buddha Park, also known as Xieng Khuan. This unusual park is filled with over 200 Buddhist and Hindu statues. The quiet and tranquil setting along the Mekong River is a contrast to the slightly eccentric sculptures which were built in 1958 by a Laotian yogi-priest shaman.

Day 3 : Vientiane – Long Cheng (for motorbike tour)
You'll hit the road early today, starting with 70km of paved roads that lead you away from the city. Then, it's onto the dirt! 60km of small dirt roads and singletrack trails will bring you through Phou Khao Kouay National Park. There's some challenging trails on this section, so if you didn't fuel up enough on breakfast or if you're not feeling too confident on the bike, the tour guide can take you on the easier dirt road! Steep rocky trails will through pine forests up to approx 2,000m above sea level. En-route, stop for a drink at a H’mong tribal village before descending on the trails with stream crossings and small bridges. Then meet your support vehicle for lunch and then cruise winding tarmac roads through the hills to Long Cheng – an old CIA air base surrounded by karst limestone mountains. Finish the day with cold beers and a BBQ on the runway that was once the busiest in the world. This is an incredible place and it's quite a strange feeling to sit on this runway. Enjoy the peaceful village surroundings, imagine about what was happening in this area some 50-60 years ago.

Day 4 : Long Cheng – Muang Hiam (for motorbike tour)
Start the day with a final ride along the runway before cruising the dirt and gravel roads that snake up through the mountains. Stop in H'mong villages along the way and you'll be amazed to see the amount of war remnants still laying around – perhaps it's uncommon for you to come across a pile of old cluster bomb casings, just laying around or used as stilts for the local houses. Waste not, want not! Then drive 35km on paved roads either side of lunch in Phonsavanh, then it's onto dirt roads again... These dirt roads get narrower throughout the afternoon and the views get even more stunning. Ride steep tracks through forests of bamboo and cross the Nam Khan River on a bridge made out of the same stuff. To round the day off, you'll dine in a rustic local "hot pot" restaurant in Muang Hiam (Houaphanh Province) and if you're willing, visit the local karaoke bar! It’s always a great (optional) experience – depending on who's singing!

Day 5 : Muang Kham – Son Koua Village - Nam Nern Night Safari
After breakfast, at 7.00am you will ride a motorbike to Son Koua Village to join the Nam Nern Night Safari. In Ban Son Khoua, meet your National Park’s English speaking guide who will be the key person sharing information about the National Park, and translating from Lao, Hmong, and Khmu languages information provided by the village wildlife spotters, the former poachers. The tour begins by a village guide taking you on a short visit around the village to introduce the daily life and the animist traditions of appeasing the village spirits. At around 11am visitors embark on a 1.5-2 hour journey on the Nam Nern River by long-tail boat to the National Park’s Total Protection Zone and the tourism camp located nearby the ranger substation. Along the way see the village upland agriculture and temporary farms. As closer we approach to the National Park boundary as more birdwatching opportunities will occur. Once arrived at the tourism camp, enjoy Lao lunch prepared by the village cooking group. After lunch, National Park’s staff will share a presentation about the Nam Et-Phou Louey National Park and the on-the-ground efforts in protecting wildlife. You will then be shown to your jungle bamboo bungalows. Free time to relax at the camp.
Optional: The National Park’s guide will invite you on an optional jungle walk around the camp to learn about the use of medicinal plants and the history of the camp site, which was once a village. Depending on the ranger availability, the park substation can be visited to learn about the law enforcement work.
At late-afternoon, the group takes the boat again to continue the journey upriver deeper inside the National Park. Enjoy birdwatching and the village wildlife spotters / boatmen might point out evidence of wildlife, such as tracks or scat if spotted at the riverbanks.
The boats continue upriver to the dinner site, a sandy, flat bank, where visitors can swim and enjoy relaxing around a campfire while team prepares the dinner. After dinner, with the help of the National Park’s English speaking guide discuss around a campfire with the wildlife spotters/former poachers. Great opportunity to ask all the questions that you might have! Afterwards, the village guide will introduce the species of animals that might be seen during the spotlighting and explain the rules and expectations for spotlighting.
The group departs for the night wildlife spotlighting once it is total dark, drifting silently down the river with the engines switched off. The wildlife guides and boatmen use their headlamp to spot wildlife. If they see something, they will give a clear sign. Then you can switch on your own flashlight to have a better look at the animal. Hence, tourists will have their flashlights switched off most of the time to avoid scaring animals. The wildlife spotter and boat drivers communicate via hand signals to avoid talking that might disturb the animals. Animals that can be seen include Sambar deer, Barking deer, various species of Civets, Spotted Linsang, Otters, Slow Loris, Porcupines, Owls. Seeing wild cats and beers is very rare, but not impossible! The latest cat sightings by Night Safari visitors include: Leopard Cat in Dec. 2019 and Asian Golden Cat in April 2019.
Overnight in Lao style bungalows. Before falling asleep in your jungle bungalow, do not hesitate to spotlight around your bungalow as a Slow Loris, Civet or Sambar Deer can be just next to your jungle accommodation.

First boatmen will drift down silently the river with the engines switched off. Possibility to spot animals as otters, sambar deer, and bird life.
Optional: If the jungle walk around the camp was not done in the Day1, it can be done in the morning of the Day 2. National Park’s guide will make this decision based on the timing on Day1.
Upon arrival in the village around 9.30AM, you are invited to fill out a wildlife monitoring form that is used to monitor wildlife abundance and indicate the amount of bonuses put into the 14 Night Safari ecotourism village development fund from the tour costs (there is no extra fee for any seen wildlife).
A minivan driver will return back to the meeting point at Son Koua Village where you get your motorbike to continue riding to Phonsavan.
On the way, stop at Tham Phiew Cave, a significant site where nearly 400 civilians sheltering from bombs were killed in a wartime massacre. There is a memorial monument and also a small museum about the attack. Arriving into Phonsavan, check in to your accommodation in town, and the evening is yours. After the ride you can enjoy some relaxation, maybe a massage, charge the batteries and get ready for the next day. There is also a few places to visit, if you fancy a look around.
